Implementation of UNHRC Resolution : Ministerial committee to be appointed

The government will appoint a high level ministerial committee shortly to coordinate the implementation of UN Human Rights Council recommendations - Resolution 30/1, an authoritative sources said yesterday.

A Cabinet paper seeking approval for the proposed committee was submitted by the Prime Minister’s office last week. The official said this committee will function as the central coordination and monitoring mechanism for the timely implementation of the UNHRC recommendations.

The implementation of the recommendations will involve several ministries as well as institutions. “The primary objective of this committee is to coordinate the initiatives between the different institutions to avert any delays,” he said. The committee chaired by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe will comprise seven Ministers, Foreign Affairs Minister Ravi Karunanayake, Ports and Shipping Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe, Law and Order Minister Sagala Ratnayake, Justice Minister Wijayadasa Rajapaksa, Development Assignments Minister Tilak Marapana, State Minister of Defence Ruwan Wijewardena and Deputy Minister of National Policies and Economic Affairs, Dr. Harsha de Silva.
