Court summons Fort Station protestors

2 July, 2017

The Medical Faculty Parents Union will move the Courts to continue their Satyagraha opposing the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine Limited (SAITM), opposite the Fort Railway Station.

According to the Vice President of the Union, Dr. Sunimal Jayakody, the group will make an application to Courts tomorrow when they present themselves before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s court as requested of them.

The Colombo Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne on Friday issued summons on several activists currently engaging in a Satyagraha campaign against the South Asian Institute of Technology and Medicine Limited (SAITM), opposite the Fort Railway Station.

The Magistrate made the order pursuant to a request made by the Railway Department which had alleged that a stage erected on a land belonging to the Railways Department opposite the Fort Railway Station was inconveniencing the public.

Speaking to the Sunday Observer, Vice President of the Union, Dr. Sunimal Jayakody said the parents will seek the right to continue the peaceful protest.

“We are not troubling the pedestrians or creating issues for any authorities,” he said, adding that, however, if the request is denied the parents will seek an alternative method to continuously voice their dissent against SAITM.

According to Jayakody, the protest campaigns by the Medical Faculty students and children will only cease when an acceptable solution to the problem is presented to them.

Courts have also informed the activists to present their submissions regarding the case before July 7.

On Thursday, the Fort Magistrate issued an order directing the activists to take steps to remove the platform which has been put up by the protesters. The Department of Railways claimed that the land on which the stage which has been erected, belonged to the Department and they have received complaints against the inconvenience caused to commuters and therefore, seek redress from the Courts.
