Peradeniya University VC re-elected

Incumbent Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Peradeniya, Prof. Upul B. Dissanayake has bagged in the highest number of votes (23) at the University Council election held yesterday which is the first stage of selecting a new VC.

Process to select the new Vice-Chancellor is now in motion as the term of the current VC will conclude 31st July, this year. Tenure of the post of VC is for three years.

According to University sources, the incumbent VC has obtained the highest number of votes while Professor Samath D. Darmarathne has obtained seven votes and Professor Athula Senarathne has obtained six votes.

“The process requires these election results to be confirmed at the next council meeting which is scheduled to be held in May this year,” University Sources told the Sunday Observer.

When the results are confirmed by the Council in May, it will be forwarded to the University Grants Commission and the Ministry of Higher Education for finalisation. The appointment of the Vice-Chancellor is then made by the President.
