Sri Lanka tours West Indies after 10 years

1 April, 2018

Sri Lanka’s cricketers are preparing to tour the West Indies after a lapse of 10 years and play in three Test matches for a trophy called the Sobers-Tissera trophy.

Sri Lanka last toured the West Indies in 2008 and drew 1-1 a Test series that also marked a maiden win for the team. Apart from Rangana Herath (if he is selected) the rest of the tour party will be first timers to a Test series in the Caribbean islands.

As a first step in preparing for the tour which starts on June 6 in Trinidad, the players will feature in an event called the Super Provincial Tournament, a championship featuring four-day matches involving four teams known as Colombo, Kandy, Galle and Dambulla and scheduled to start on March 30. Sri Lanka is the current custodian of the Sobers-Tissera trophy after winning it at a home series in 2015. Sri Lanka has previously toured the West Indies on three occasions.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said all players with national contracts will take part in the tournament with Angelo Mathews captaining Kandy, Dinesh Chandimal Colombo, Suranga Lakmal Galle and Dimuth Karunaratne Dambulla.
