SriLankan on new revival plan

8 April, 2018

The new management of SriLankan Airlines is working on a fresh strategy to revive the airline and making it a profitable carrier in three years.

The new strategy will be based on proposals suggested by a restructuring plan already done by an aviation consultancy firm, along with fresh consultations with existing staff, unions and other stakeholders.

Newly appointed Chairman Ranjith Fernando told the media last week, the new management will look into both positive and negative factors of the airline, and they may have to take hard decisions as far as the restructuring process is concerned.

He said the airline is overstaffed by about 2,000 people and airline is also quite overpriced at present. The new board will also not run the airline, but will launch the restructuring plan and will ensure the management will achieve its targets in three years. “We will supervise and set clear objectives,” he said. “We need to cut losses and strengthen the financial situation of the airline.” Once the targets are achieved, the airline would look for a strategic partner or investor to run the airline on a long-term plan.
