As the vocal trainer of ‘THE VOICE BY ISHAN DE LANEROLLE’ and director and producer of the concert ‘The Different Voices’ and many other choral performances, musical legend Ishan de Lanerolle helps shape the next generation of musical performers into leaders in the choral field. Ishan’s passion for teaching, his dedication and patience training his students makes even those who’ve been told they can’t sing get on to stage with confidence. To give it a go and giving more experienced singers the opportunity to grow in confidence. Ishan is supported by his wonderful team.

Amidst his busy schedule Ishan was very accommodative and willing to speak to us about his inspirations, his passion and his plans for the future.

Ishan tell our readers who your mentors /role models are?

My parents are my biggest role models. While my mum taught me to have an eye for detail my dad instilled in me the importance of dedication and commitment I should put in, in order to succeed in whatever, I do.

What are your expectations for the singers and students you train and how do you hold them accountable for meeting your expectations?

I believe every voice is unique and it’s a gift from God. I’m only guiding them and showing them what they are gifted with while helping them to bring out their best. Yes, of course all my students are great singers in their own way. All of them work with responsibility and motivation and I’m proud of their journey so far.

What criterion do you use for choosing repertoire?

I would say every voice has its own advantage and its unique quality that will favour some genre. So, suitability of their voice matters a lot.

What are you focusing on right now in your work?

“Right now, it’s my vocal training classes ‘Voice by Ishan De Lanerolle’. We will be presenting a two day concert shortly and all my students will be performing in age appropriate levels. Other than that, I have a few shows lined up with my brother Rohan In Colombo and overseas as well. So, this is a very hectic season for us. So much pressure, but I love every bit of it.”

Tell us something about your upcoming concert?

It’s called ‘The Different Voices 2’. This is our second year. I thought of this name due to the diversity of voices my students have and it’s beautiful. We have been practicing for the concert these days and I am thankful to all my students and their parents for all the support given to me.

What one piece of advice would you offer to our young singers?

There’s not a star in heaven that we can’t reach. This is something I believe and I’ve experienced myself. “Nothing comes easy. If there is a will, there is always a way, and nothing is impossible.

At Ishan’s vocal training sessions, “THE VOICE BY ISHAN DE LANEROLLE”, we found a group of junior, intermediate and senior students, both boys and girls, who were 4 years and above committed to a love for music and singing.

Voice training with Ishan is a great way for training the young and the young at heart to gain musical skills and confidence as soloists or in a group setting. If there’s anyone who enjoys music and singing, “THE VOICE BY ISHAN DE LANEROLLE” provides them with a fun and an inviting setting to pursue their interests. Adults can enrol too. Learning to sing correctly is a process that involves learning correct vocal techniques, developing aural skills, learning music literacy, and much more!

They are all taught in an age appropriate manner to give it a go and giving more experienced singers the opportunity to grow in confidence. Ishan is supported by his wonderful team.

Mevan and Aaron who assist Ishan and look up to him not only as their voice trainer but also as their mentor, spoke to YV about vocal training with Ishan and how they feel about it.
