23 September, 2018

The Sussex College Network has continuously taken an innovative approach towards moulding youth who are the future of the country. Tvision has been the backbone of the network which functions in collaboration with internationally recognised organisations to give its students every opportunity to excel in all spheres within its 20 branches in 08 provinces, since the establishment of the first school in 2004.

As in all curricula and extra-curricula activities organised by the school, the management led by Founder/Chief Executive Officer, Sussex Group, K.A.Sunil Jayatissa, ensures that each student is granted a wholesome education which will enable him/her to face the future with confidence.

Among such a wealth of opportunities is the Youth Leadership Programme, which is mainly for students who are keen to pursue a leading role in society as their skills are further honed through public speaking, debates and workshops conducted locally and internationally. The programme is affiliated to Toastmasters International USA, in order to have 1000 youth leaders in the course of 10 weeks. The programme is being implemented in 40 colleges in several regions. The idea was presented by Arunasalam Balraj - the current President of Toastmasters International USA.

“We worked as a group to produce 40 Student Youth Leaders in our branches in Nugegoda, Horana, Malabe, Kiribathgoda and Negombo,” said Coordinator, Youth Leadership Programme, Sussex College, Theja Gamage.“We formed and registered the Sussex Nugegoda Gavel Club with Toastmasters International USA,”she said. In addition, the students of Sussex College celebrated the grand finale of the Youth Leadership Programme and the Charter Installation Ceremony at Sussex Gavel Club Nugegoda, in June.

The chief guest at the event, Founder Chairman and CEO of Sussex College Network, K.A Sunil Jayatissa in his speech said “This is a great opportunity for students of Sussex College, Nugegoda to become great leaders.” The event was attended by distinguished guests including Toastmasters -Mahesh Jayasinghe and Srianthi Salgado.

The event commenced with a model meeting. The highlight of the gala celebration was the award received by 17-year-old Thina Badri from the Edexcel class of the Nugegoda Branch who was the 2nd runner up at the semifinals. She participated in the Prepared Speech Contest and her topic was, ‘Fantasies We Have’. “The competition served as a platform for me to portray the real me. I am thankful to my wonderful teacher Ms.Theja Gamage who extended her fullest support towards my success,” Badri said.

The Youth Leadership Programme and such initiatives are in line with Sussex College’s mission to mentor youth and lead them on a path filled with multi-faceted opportunities to grow into the best they can be in this competitive world. It is clearly a landmark achievement for the leading international school network which has continued to receive awards and acclaim for the pivotal role it plays in the stream of education.
