Met Dept. forecasts heavy rains

Heavy rains and thunder showers are expected across the island till October 8, an official of the Department of Meteorology said.

“The prevailing rainy conditions are expected to increase today, the Department said adding that heavy rains can be expected across the country.

“Heavy rainfall amounting to 150mm can be expected in the Central, Uva, Sabaragamuwa, North Western and Western provinces,” the Duty Forecaster said adding that the North Central and Southern provinces along with Mannar and Vavuniya districts can also expect a significant rainfall.

With inclement weather, wind speeds up to 70-80 kmph are also expected while sea surges of 2-2.5m have also been predicted extending from Kalutara to Pottuvil.

The National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has requested the public to be vigilant of landslides, slope failures, rock falls, cutting failures and ground subsidence if the rain continues.

The NBRO has identified Badulla, Passara, Haldummulla Divisional Secretariat Divisions and surrounding areas as locations for potential risk.
