Army, Colombo FC in FA Cup semis

Defending Champs Army Sports Club and Colombo FC advanced to the semi finals in the Vintage FA Cup football tournament played at the Sugadathasa Stadium yesterday.

Sri Lanka Transport Board was defeated by Army SC 2-0 in the first quarterfinal while Colombo FC were beaten by New Young SC 3-1 in the second quarter final played at same venue under lights.

In the first quarterfinal Army secured an easy win over SLTB and they netted the first goal in the 30th minute of the game when Kasun Pradeep scored. Both teams played a drab game although SLTB had some good goal scoring opportunities as Army defenders managed to hold them off.

The first half concluded with one goal to nil in favour of Army. In the second half former Sri Lanka player Badara Warakagoda scored Army’s second goal in the 70th minute.

SLTB were shown as many as four yellow cards for foul play.

The second quarter final between Colombo FC and New Young SC ended in a scoreless draw and in the penalty shootout Colombo FC won 3-1.

SLTB defeat Killinochchi’s Uruthirapuram on penalties while Army beat United SC in the super sixteen and advanced to the quarterfinals.

The third and fourth quarters between Prison SC against Saunders SC and Renown SC versus Police SC will be played today at the same venue.

Renown SC qualified for the quarterfinal after a hard fought 4-0 where Dilip Pieris scored a hat-trick against Air Force.

Colombo FC also had a tough time against Java Lane SC to win the game 3-1 with two of those goals coming in stoppage time of the second half.

New Youngs defeated Negombo SC 4-0 to qualify for the quarters.

Saunders SC, the 15-time FA Cup Champions rampaged over Eveready SC from Batticaloa to win 6-2 in the Round of 16.

Prison SC came into the quarterfinal stage after defeating Civil Security SC 3-0 while St. Nicholas SC defeated Jaffna rivals St. Mary’s 2-0.
