North Western girls to the fore

An exciting brand of rugby was witnessed at the Inter-Provincial Women’s Rugby Sevens tournament that was held at the Navy ground in Welisara last Sunday (March 31) where North Western ‘B’ team emerged Cup champions when they beat Southern Province by 20 points to 5 in the final.

Led by Sachinthani Ariyawansa they played very well to overcome the stiff challenge offered by Southern Province who tackled resolutely.

Both teams brought off some effective tackling and displayed good skills in the mauls and rucks.

The Shield was won by Sabaragamuwa Province ‘B’ team who beat Central Province by 15 points to 5 in the final. The scores were 5-5 at half time. Sabaragamuwa ‘B’ was led by Sanoja Ranasinghe who excelled with speedy running to score a couple of tries. Western Province won the Bowl event with a comprehensive win 29-0. Western Province was led by Kavisha Perera who was also speedy that saw her score a few tries. The winner of the Plate event was decided with play going into extra time. Uva Province scored a try during extra time after the game ended without any scores on the board.

Overall, the performances of all teams were much improved. Their skills were good in rucks and when tackled to win possession. Tackling were effective but the speedy runners had a distinct advantage and were able to score the tries. Sathinaki Jayanika was adjudged the Player of the Tournament. The tournament was sponsored by SAGT and their Chief Commercial Officer Ted Muttiah was the chief guest at the awards ceremony.
