Skanda praises Sanga

5 May, 2019

Former Sri Lanka Cricket secretary S Skandakumar praised ex-Sri Lanka cricketer Kumar Sangakkara on his appointment as the next head of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in England saying he was a revelation.

“Here is yet another example of the sheer inherent talent of our beautiful nation and its people.....preserved in this instance but sadly squandered in many others.

“Let’s together keep and nurture what we have and build a credible United base to bring what we lost back,” said Skandakumar, Sri Lanka’s High Commissioner in Australia.

Meanwhile Sri Lanka Cricket said that Sangakkara deserves such an elevation and honour taking into account his achievements on and off the field.

“Sangakkara’s prowess on the field demonstrated his career figures of 12,400 Test runs, more than 14,000 One-Day International runs and almost 1400 T20 runs, as well as his prowess off the field in the arenas of speech and commentary, mentoring, entrepreneurship and social service which has made him a legend, idolized and revered by many and we at Sri Lanka Cricket are most delighted that he continues to bring honour and glory to this beautiful island nation,” Sri Lanka Cricket secretary Mohan de Silva said in a statement.

Sangakkara’s appointment was announced by current MCC president Anthony Wreford on Wednesday and will come into effect on October 1 for a period of one year.

Sangakkara is already an honorary life member of the MCC, who are the keepers and authority of the sport’s laws of cricket and has served in its world cricket committee for the past seven years.
