The Melwa Group of Companies has built a two-storey children’s ward, the Suraksha Children’s Centre at the Negombo General Hospital.

The company allocated Rs. 200 million for this CSR project that was opened recently. The ground and first floors have two wards, with 50 beds each.

“We have taken this initiative to complement the government’s effort to provide quality healthcare facilities for people, especially for children. We have set an example for the business community to engage in such development projects and we see the investment as a worthy contribution towards the well-being of our children,” Director Business Development, Prof. Ranjith Bandara said.

“We will maintain the building on a long term basis. This will ensure quality and sustainability of the building which in turn will have a huge benefit on children seeking treatment at the hospital,” he said. The hospital is on par with international standards that are appealing to the children. The large lobby has vibrantly-coloured fish in a large tank and the entry area walls have large cartoon sketches of animals and trees.

“This was a long felt need for the area and we are thankful to the Melwa group for their magnanimous contribution.

A child of the Muruganandan family owning the diversified Melwa Group was undergoing treatment for dengue and during, treatment, a suggestion was made to assist to build this ward,” Consultant Paediatrician Dr. Lak Kumar Fernando said.

“The Muruganandan family members and two engineers then visited the Ratnapura hospital’s children’s building with me and said that they would take the responsibility to build the special unit in the Negombo hospital,” he said.
