GMOA strike in the offing

Any attempts by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA) to use Anti-SAITM slogans or statements in their upcoming island-wide strike would be a contempt of court according to President’s Counsel Upul Jayasuriya.

During a press conference held on Thursday (15) the GMOA announced that its executive committee has decided to go on an island-wide strike any day in the upcoming week. Secretary of the trade union, Haritha Aluthge told the media that, Health Minister Rajitha Senaratne is stalling the ‘minimum prescribed standards for medical education’ passed in Parliament as the Minister intends to open a few more substandard private universities similar to SAITM.

“If these people try to drag SAITM into their trade union action, they would likely face severe consequences,” Jayasuriya PC said. He added, “the GMOA thinks they are above the law. But they cannot touch SAITM now. If they try to say something about SAITM or SAITM graduates they would be liable for contempt of court”.
