Sing-along concert to mark 43 years in photojournalism

Senior Photojournalist Herbert Perera will be marking his 43rd Anniversary in Photojournalism on a musical note with a sing-along on Sep. 7 at the Grand Oriental Hotel Lotus Ballroom from 7 pm.

Major attractions at the concert will be Nalin & The Star Combination who will be the main band with guest artistes Anil Bhareti, Rajive Sebastian, Christine Goonewardene and Priya Peiris of La Bambas who promise to complete a unique musical extravaganza.

Herbert began his career at the Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation in 1974 where he worked for 20 years before taking up full time Photography. ‘I was a professional Photographer who did wedding photography, and other events, comparatively different to those of the present. Thereafter I joined the Sun and Weekend newspapers as a freelance Photojournalist and was very much involved in Sports and Fashion Photography, he said.

Following the closure of the Gunasena Publications, publishers of Sun and Weekend a stroke of luck brought Herbert the break to apply for a similar vacancy at Lake House - the Ceylon Daily News –as a freelance photographer and sports reporter for Kotte. “When I went for the interview the Local Editor told me to start work the following day. My first assignment was to cover the all-night pirith ceremony and the laying of the foundation stone ceremony for the new Parliament of Sri Lanka, in Kotte.

“Subsequently, I learnt fashion photography under veteran Fashion Designer and writer, the late Yrol Jayawardene, with whom I covered Fashion events in Sri Lanka and overseas, including Singapore, Malaysia, England and India, where I covered the Mumbai Inter-nations Fashion Show twice”, reminisced Herbert.

Having covered five Cricket World Cup Finals in Australia, England, Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka,Herbert has also been a photographer for six Twenty20 Cricket Finals in England, Australia, South Africa,India West Indies and Sri Lanka.

“This “SING-ALONG” is to mark my 43rd Anniversary as a Photojournalist, he told the media last week.
