Cash prizes totalling rupees one million and trophies will be presented to the winners at the 97th Open National Badminton Championship and the 37th Junior Championship 2019 to be played at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium from January 12 to 18.
These championships were to be held in November last year but was postponed due to unavoidable circumstances.
The Open category will conduct 24 events for men and women while there will be 18 events in the Junior Category. The Open singles events are for those under-23, over-35, 40, 45, 50, 55, 60 and 65 for men and women and doubles for men and women over-40, 45, 50, 60, 65 and 70.
The Junior boys and girls will compete in singles in the age groups of under-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19. The doubles events for boys and girls are for those under-13, 15, 17 and 19.
These details were disclosed by Parakrama Basnayake, the tournament committee chairman to the media.
The badminton Association has also taken steps to promote the sport to the rural areas by conducting training programs for coaches, referees and players with the aim of improving the quality of players they train.
