Northern Tamil parties decide to contest under three alliances

8 March, 2020

The Northern Tamil parties have decided to contest the forthcoming general election under three main alliances, Tamil political sources said.

According to sources the Tamil National Alliance under the leadership of R. Sampanthan will contest as a separate group. The Tamil National People’s Alliance under the leadership of Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam and Tamil People’s National Allianceunder C.V. Wigneswaran will contest separately. The sources added that the members of the EPRLF, along with former Provincial Councillor Anandi Shashidaran, former members of TELO Sri Kantha and M.K. Shivajilingam will team up with Wigneswaran.

The Tamil parties will not support the Ranil Wickremesinghe led UNP or the Sajith faction. The TNA was a major supporter for the UNP at the last Presidential election. Our political source in Jaffna said that the EPDP led by Douglas Devananda will contest as a separate group at the Parliamentary General Election.
