Corruption in cricket: Who got it wrong, Minister or Media?

7 June, 2020

Sri Lanka Cricket came back strongly to defend current members of the team after it was reported by some sections of the media on Wednesday that three players are under investigation by the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) Anti-Corruption Unit.

It had been reported, according to SLC, that Sports Minister Dallas Alahapperuma had said at a function on Tuesday that three players of the team are presently under investigation by the ICC. But SLC countering the Media report said in a Statement that Minister Alahapperuma referred to three former players.

“Sri Lanka Cricket wishes to announce that none of the current national players are under investigation by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit.

“SLC strongly believes that, what the Honorable Minister actually mentioned was about an investigation launched by the ICC Anti-Corruption Unit against three former Sri Lanka players and not the current national players,” SLC said in its Statement which did not identify the misleading media organisation or organisations.

A senior reporter who covered the function, to present school coaches with financial donations courtesy of SLC, said Minister Alahapperuma had not made any reference to current or past players other than in general.

It is a well known fact that Sri Lanka Cricket often finds itself grappling with what has come to be known as an “amateurish new media” covering the affairs of cricket, especially when it comes to Accreditation.
