The big name currently in Sri Lanka cricket Angelo Mathews has been pushed down to the status of an amateur by two other allrounders in Asela Gunaratne and a 22-year old Dhananjaya Lakshan who are currently going places in the Lanka Premier League.
While Mathews captaining the Colombo Kings has made just 63 runs while occupying the crease six times and taking just four wickets, Gunaratne who represented the Kandy Tuskers is the leading allrounder with 168 runs and nine wickets surpassing even Thisara Perera who has taken just five scalps from five matches for the Jaffna Stallions.
Thisara is not the leading run getter, an honour which goes to Dhanushka Gunathilaka from the Galle Gladiators who has aggregated 462 runs from eight appearances that puts him streets ahead of second placed Laurie Evans who has scored 289 runs for the Colombo Kings.
The former Richmond College schoolboy Lakshan has taken eight wickets with his medium pace bowling for the Gladiators showing plenty of promise for the future.
In contrast to the captaincy and contributions made by Mathews, the skipper of the Dambulla Vikings Dasun Shanaka is the third best run maker in the LPL with an aggregate of 273 runs that has 14 sixes and 24 fours.
Shanaka has also taken four wickets.
The other leading run makers are Kusal Mendis with 263 for the Kandy Tuskers and Niroshan Dickwella with 241 for the Dambulla Vikings.
The leading wicket taker is Jaffna Stallions player Wanindu Hasaranga de Silva who has 13 wickets followed by paceman Mohamed Amir who has grabbed 10 scalps with the best performance in the LPL of 5 for 26,a feat that is likely to be unmatched for some time.
Colombo Kings player Qais Ahamed has 11 wickets.
Fast bowlers Kasun Rajitha (6), Suranga Lakmal (6), Nuwan Pradeep (8), Dushmantha Chameera (7) and Isuru Udana (5) are also among the wicket takers.
