The inaugural Football Super League which was postponed twice is expected to be staged by the end of January if the current COVID-19 situation is brought under control, a senior officer of the Football Federation of Sri Lanka (FFSL) confirmed.
This is a new Professional League and its main focus is to popularize this sport with foreign players.
“If things are going smoothly and under control, we are expecting to kick start the most awaited Super League by the end of January. The final date is still at discussion level and we have to consider the quarantine period of the participating foreign players too,” said a senior official of the FFSL.
This tournament with the participation of 10 of Sri Lanka’s top teams, was originally due to start last April and then rescheduled for November 20, but the COVID-19 raised its ugly head once again compelling the authorities to push back the tournament considering the health of the players.
Many players, coaches and ex-players have shown an incredibly positive response towards this new Professional League.
Experts say that Sri Lanka needs encouragement and positive sporting role models in order to boost participation in the sport and organising a professional league such as this was a much-needed project for the future of football as the players will get a morale boost as professionals.
