Rs. 910 million fraud: Bank director remanded

BIBILE: A director of a private bank located in Maharagama was arrested on Tuesday in connection with an alleged Rs. 910 million fraud.

The fraud is alleged to have taken place in staggered stages between 2017 and 2018, according to police.

The suspect was arrested at his home in Bibile following a detailed probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)

He was later produced before a local Magistrate and remanded till June 8.

Student electrocuted in Vesak tragedy

AHANGAMA: A 17-year-old student was electrocuted while setting up flash bulbs at his home on the eve of the Vesak Full Moon Day.

The victim was apparently struck with a high voltage of electricity and fell motionless on to the ground.

He was later rushed to the Ahangama hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

The student was a resident of Kottegoda in Ahangama.

He tried to charm his way out with biscuits

INGIRIYA: A 32-year-old man was nabbed with a quantity of heroin at a road block in Nambapane in Kettakedella in Ingiriya earlier this week.

He was nabbed when police officers became suspicious of the man after he had offered them a packet of biscuits.

He had claimed that he was searching for a pharmacy to purchase medicinal drugs for his ailing wife.

The heroin was found neatly stashed under the driver’s seat.

Man in wheel-barrow fiasco arrested

ALUTHGAMA: A man who challenged the Covid-19 travel ban and pushed to a wheel barrow to a supermarket was arrested since he also chose not wear a mask.

Security television grabs clearly show the man leaving the supermarket and quietly pushing the wheel barrow loaded with groceries.

The wheel barrow was not the issue but the man was arrested for violating the Covid-19 health regulations and faced charges accordingly, a police official said.

The incident took place at a location in Aluthgama and the man is a resident of Dharga Town in Aluthgama.

Bogus doctors on the mat

POLICE HQ: Three persons, who had claimed to be doctors in a bid to dodge the travel ban during the Covid-19 travel restrictions were nabbed in separate incidents this week. They were picked up while driving their vehicles at locations in Narahenpitiya, Wellawatte and Cinnamon Gardens by alert police officers manning checkpoints in those areas.

The police have been instructed to remain on alert of clever impersonators that claim to be persons who do not come under the travel restrictions such as personnel from essential services that include health workers.

The three suspects would not only be dealt as per the quarantine laws but also face charges of cheating by impersonation.
