An up market restaurant located on the ground floor of the Race Course Building in Colombo 7 was completely gutted by a fire that raged through the building during the early hours of yesterday morning, police and fire officials said.
They said a suspected gas leak is believed to have triggered-off an explosion that caused the fire.
The restaurant is believed to have been empty at the time of the fire and no casualties were reported.
Six fire trucks from the Colombo Municipal Council Fire Brigade and the Cinnamon Gardens Police were pressed into service in a joint effort to douse the fire.
The Cinnamon Gardens Police is carrying out further investigations.
