More questions for badminton officials

2 January, 2022

Sri Lanka Badminton (SLB) has got its priorities mixed up from time to time as they don’t seem to wish that badminton players improve and go places.

This time they have refused to look at players who represent the Rising Star Badminton Academy when it comes to overseas tournaments.

At the recent badminton Nationals many players from this academy emerged winners in their events and this appears to have soured the mouths of the top brass at SLB who are refusing to enter these winning players for foreign competitions.

Clarence Homer, a former badminton player who now runs this academy told the Sunday Observer that he had asked SLB to enter some of their players for a tournament in Vietnam and that they declined to do so.

“According to World Badminton Federation (WBF) rules, only the governing body for the sport can enter names of players for any particular foreign tournament and will not accept entries sent by any other affiliated clubs or individuals,” said Homer.

At one time SLB brought about a ruling that a player can enter his or her name for a single event. That means a player who plays in the singles cannot play in the doubles event.

Such a ruling is a violation of human rights by any standards.

An SLB official declined to comment on the matter. (TBR)
