Standing over six feet tall, Vernon Prins was known as the ‘gentle giant’, both on and off the hockey and cricket fields.

He played Afghanistan and India in hockey.

A brilliant Centre Forward, his wristy first timers from top of the ‘D’ resulted in many spectacular goals. In the first ever National Hockey Championship of Ceylon in 1956, representing Mercantile HA he scored a hat-trick in the final and that spoke volumes of his prowess.

He captained the All-Ceylon cricket team from 1956/58 and was indispensable during his career at the Nondescript Cricket Club (NCC) as the premier batsman and wily off-spin bowler.
