Sarangi qualifies, Gayanthika out

Sri Lanka athlete Sarangi Silva qualified to the women’s long jump final day of the XXII Commonwealth Games at the Alexander Stadium yesterday.

Turkey-based athlete Sarangi Silva who skipped out of the World Athletic Championship in Oregon, USA despite qualifying to focus on the Commonwealth Games, achieved her target of qualifying to the finals of the women’s long jump.

She was selected to the final as one of the 12 best performers after leaping a distance of 6.42 metres to be placed sixth in group B. The qualifying mark 6.75 (Q) or at least 12 best performers (q) advance to the final.

Gayanthika Abeyratne missed out on qualifying for the finals of the women’s 1,500m after finishing seventh in heat two returning a time of four minutes 16.97 seconds. The first five in each heat qualify (Q) and the next two fastest (q) advance to the final
