University girls take to rugby in major development

23 October, 2022

In what is said to be a revolution in women’s sports development, an event called University Development Tag Rugby Tournament 2022 will be held on Sunday (October 23) at the Thurstan College ground in Colombo commencing 8.30 am.

Organisers say it is the first ever women’s rugby tournament in the history of sports at university level in the country some 50 years after the commencement of men’s rugby at campus.

“This tournament will be a very good example for Sri Lanka Rugby’s vision in promoting and popularizing rugby among females representing different areas in the country,” said an organizing committee spokesman.

He said undergraduates from the universities of Colombo, Peradeniya, Sri Jayawardenapura, Uva Wellessa, Sabaragamuwa and the Kotalawela Defence University will contest the tournament.

The tournament is the brainchild of Dr. Samantha Nanayakkara, a senior lecturer at the University of Colombo and female executive mmber of Sri Lanka Rugby.

“I am quite sure our girls will improve their playing skills with more knowledge about the game soon. Starting women’s rugby at universities is long overdue in our university sports,” said Dr. Nanayakkara.
