New Act to combat drug menace near schools

4 December, 2022

The Government will bring a special Bill to combat criminal drug network operations, which have become a threat to schoolchildren.

A new Act to combat the drug menace will be introduced instead of amending the Dangerous Drugs and Poisons Ordinance.

Following the President’s instructions, the President’s Chief of Staff Sagala Ratnayake and security top brass discussed the drafting of the new Act.

Police Media spokesman SSP Nihal Talduwa said that they had notified all police stations to seize any chocolate bars or toffees sold near schools without the registered trade name.

The police will conduct raids based on information they have received about these items.

Education Ministry sources said they have taken steps to strengthen school committees to prevent schoolchildren getting addicted to these drugs.
