Joseph Vaz and Ave Maria girls best at schools athletics

St. Joseph Vaz College, Wennappuwa and Ave Maria Convent, Negombo became Champions at the Ritzbury Sir John Tarbat Junior Schools Athletic Championship that concluded on December 30 at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex in Diyagama.

Sixteen new records were established and one record was equalled in the event that was conducted by the Sri Lanka Schools Athletic Association (SLSAA).

St. Joseph Vaz College collected 64 points to occupy the top spot in the boys’ event while Maris Stella College Negombo was the runners-up with 50 points.

Ave Maria Convent with 68 points finished on top in the girls’ event while Ambagamuwa Central finished runners-up with 65 points.

The event attracted a record 3000 participants from schools all over the country. They were from the age groups of under-12 to 15 for boys and girls.

Thushara Mendis of Lyceum IS (853 points) was adjudged the best boy athlete while V.P.N. Samadhi of Vijitha Central, Dickwella (907 points) received the award for best girl athlete.

Nilupul de Silva the GM Marketing of CBL was the chief guest and said that they are happy to support the Sir John Tarbat Schools Athletic Championship for many years with the objective of uplifting athletics at school level.

“We had to consider the sponsorship amid many challenges. However our passions and commitment for the development of the country’s sports encouraged us to continue our support at this difficult time,” added De Silva. (TBR)
