The 70th National Badminton Championship 2022 which was delayed is set to be played from January 16 -22.
The Championship will be held under two categories as senior and junior levels.
These details were disclosed to the media at a press briefing held in Colombo on Wednesday.
The Organizing Committee led by Tournament Director Rohan de Silva addressing the media said that it took nearly two months to find the finalists for the championship and around 1700 have qualified to take part in the senior category while in the junior class 7500 young players will be in action.
“This tournament will give an opportunity for young players to witness seniors play and to gain more interest towards the sport”, said de Silva. Adding further he said that due to the high number of entries the organizing Committee had to make arrangements to play these matches at three different venues namely Sugathadsa stadium and Mercantile Courts and SLB Courts.
The sponsors for the Championship are Liming, Mobil and McFoil while Gaja TV will serve as the Media partner.
For the first time in the history of badminton financial awards too are on offer for winners along with trophies according to the organizers.
The veterans tourney will also take place in different age groups. It was also said that Niluka Karunaratne who held the Championship title for a long period has decided to keep away from the event making way for his brother Dinuka to fight for the national title.
