Ball-passing sideshow at Kandy-SLR ‘ban game’

19 March, 2023

Kandy Sports Club which won the inter club league rugby title and refused to play in the subsequent Clifford Cup knock-out tournament is reported to have been banned for one year.

But it is unclear whether the decision to ban Kandy SC has been ratified by Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR) which met at a Council meeting on Thursday to take up the issue.

Asked for confirmation by means of an authoritative statement, an official of SLR said: “You can speak to tournament committee director Shamrath Fernando.”

Fernando refused to say anything other than reveal he was at what he called the “big match” when the Sunday Observer wanted to seek clarification.

Kandy SC pulled out of the Clifford Cup over a dispute with SLR over the venue saying they wanted to play their Clifford Cup matches on their home ground at Nittawela to enable more spectator patronage by their supporters.

But SLR refused to grant Kandy SC’s request claiming tournament rules say the Clifford Cup games are permitted to be played on what they call “neutral grounds”.

Eventually both Kandy SC and SLR traded arguments and claims in the media over each other’s rights and wrongs.

CR and FC won the Clifford Cup when they beat Navy SC in the final.
