Afghanistan to play in Hambantota for first time

14 May, 2023

Sri Lanka and Afghanistan are expected to be locked in a close series in the first week of June as the two teams contest a three-match ODI competition.

The Afghanistan team will arrive in Sri Lanka on May 29 to play the matches scheduled for June 2 (Friday), 4 (Sunday) and 7 (Wednesday) at the Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota as day games.

Sri Lanka and Afghanistan have faced each other in seven matches before in ODIs and out of them, Sri Lanka have won four and Afghanistan two with one match ending without a result. One of Afghanistan’s wins was registered on their last tour of the island in 2022 when they beat Sri Lanka by 60 runs at Pallekele in a series that ended in a 1-1 result with one match rained off.

Some changes are expected to be made in the Sri Lanka team that last featured in a three match ODI series in New Zealand in March this year and lost 0-3.
