Part 2: The Wolf is Lose Chapter 3

Good evening, I’m Ellie Jackson and tonight we’re reporting on the ongoing protests against the mass evictions in Colombo. Project Fortress promises to accommodate climate refugees in insulated skyscrapers, but it has come at a cost for many residents who have lived in the city for generations.

I’m here with a group of protestors who have been staging a sit-in demonstration in front of government buildings for the past few days. They are demanding that the government provide adequate relocation facilities for those who have been evicted from their homes.

One of the protestors, Mrs. Silva, had this to say: “We were promised that we would be relocated to better homes, but instead we have been sent to these temporary shelters where there is no proper sanitation or clean water. It’s a violation of our basic human rights.”

Others in the crowd shared similar stories of violence and forced eviction. “They came in the middle of the night, masked paramilitary types, and dragged us out of our homes,” one protestor said. “They threw us into trucks and took us away like we were criminals.”

We reached out to the government for comment, but they have yet to respond. Meanwhile, these protests show no sign of slowing down as more and more families are forced out of their homes with no clear solution in sight.

This is Ellie Jackson reporting for ‘Nightly News’.

John sat at his desk, scrolling through the ‘Project Fortress’ website. The mega city promised to offer the best of both worlds - a safe haven from the cold weather, and all the amenities of a luxury lifestyle.

“Sarah, come take a look at this,” John called out, his eyes glued to the screen.

Sarah walked into the room and peered over his shoulder, looking at the sleek, modern apartments with awe.

“Wow, this looks amazing,” Sarah said, as she scanned the different floor plans.

“Right? And check out the amenities,” John said, clicking on a video clip that showcased the project.

The video played, and Sarah watched in wonder as the camera panned over the complex’s rooftop pool, state-of-the-art gym, and upscale restaurants.

“This is incredible,” Sarah said, “We’ll never have to leave the complex. It’s like a city within a city.”

John nodded in agreement. “Exactly. We’ll have everything we need right here, and we won’t have to worry about the cold weather anymore.”

It has been a year since John and Sarah relocated to Southern Sri Lanka with dreams of enjoying the warm tropical climate, but their hopes were quickly dashed. With ice sheets rapidly advancing from the Polar Regions, temperatures have been plummeting worldwide. Evenings have become uncomfortably chilly, and scientists have cautioned that the situation could worsen, potentially disrupting food supplies and habitable areas across the globe.

Sarah’s expression suddenly turned serious. “But what about all the people who won’t have access to a place like this when the Ice Age starts?”

John looked at her quizzically. “What do you mean?”

“I mean, not everyone can afford to live in a place like this. And what about the people who are already suffering because of climate change? They won’t have the luxury of a high-end complex to shield them from the worst of it,” Sarah explained.

John thought for a moment before responding. “I see your point, Sarah. But what can we do about it? We’re lucky enough to have the means to provide for ourselves.”

Sarah shook her head. “I don’t know, John. It just doesn’t seem fair. We shouldn’t be complacent and think only of ourselves.”

As Sarah walked out of the room, she couldn’t shake off the feeling of unease that had settled in her stomach. She knew that the mega city might offer a solution, but it wouldn’t solve the larger problem.

She sat on the balcony, looking out at the ocean, lost in thought.
