Methvan and Dinara in the forefront of tennis Nationals

Methvan Wijemanne of Royal College clinched three titles at the 108th National Tennis championships being held at the SLTA courts at Sir Marcus Fernando Mawatha.

Wijemanne won the under-16 singles and doubles and the under 18 boys doubles titles along the way to steal the limelight.

Dinara de Silva of St. Bridget’s Convent has already clinched two titles and is in the women’s final where she will meet the former national women’s champion Anjalika Kurera.

The men’s and women’s finals will be played today (20).

Boys U-16 singles final:

Methvan Wijemanne beat Ganuka Fernando 6/1, 2/6, 6/1

Doubles final:

Methwan Wijemanne and Sandas Usgodaarachch beat Ganuka Fernando and C. Wickremasinghe 6/2, 6/4

U-18 doubles final:

Methvan Wijemanne and Vichinthaya Nilaweera beat Ransath Peiris and Matheesha Nettasinghe 6/4, 6/2

Girls’ U-18 singles final

Dinara de Silva beat Saajida Razick 7-6 (3), 6-3

U-16 singles final

Dinara de Silva beat Ruvi Lewkebandara 6-1, 6-0

Women’s semi-finals:

Dinara de Silva beat Saajida Razick 4-6, 6-2, 6-3

Anjalika Kurera beat Dinethya Dharmarathne 3-6, 6-4, 6-0

Men’s semi-final

Chathurya Nilaweear beat Apna Perera 6/2, 6/3, 6/1.

Ashen Silva beat Sharmal Dissanayake 2/2 (Sharmal retired)

Boys U-14 final

Aahil Kaleel beat Chamidu Abeysinghe 6/2, 0/6, 7/5

Girls U-12 final

Anaya Norbet beat Hesandi Mallawa 6/4, 6/3.
