Fidhyan Muhammad, the accomplished swimmer from Zahira College, continued his sensational run by clinching his second record-breaking victory at the 48th MILO-sponsored Sri Lanka Schools Aquatic Sports Championship at the Sugathadasa Stadium Swimming Pool Complex yesterday.
Muhammad, who had already set an Under-16 100m Breaststroke record the previous day, astounded the audience once again on the fourth day of the five-day championship.
This time, he conquered the Under-16 200m Breaststroke, breaking a decade-long record and securing the gold medal in style. His remarkable time of 2:34.82 shattered the previous record of 2:36.55, held since 2012 by renowned swimmer Akshaya Kumarajeewa of St Joseph’s College.
The championship witnessed another remarkable feat as Yashith Wijesundara from DS Senanayake College established a new meet record in the Under-16 400m Freestyle final. Wijesundara’s swift performance clocked in at 4:26.87, surpassing the previous record of 4:30.28 set in 2017 by Manula Cooray of Ananda College.
In the overall standings, defending boys’ champions St Joseph’s College stood atop the points table, establishing an unassailable lead with 344 points. Wattala Lyceum International School secured the second position with 167 points, while St Peter’s College moved to the third spot with 161 points.
Among the girls’ category, reigning champions Visakha Vidyalaya maintained their dominance, securing the summit with an impressive 190 points. Mahamaya College followed closely in second place with 156 points.
Most notably, Gampaha Lyceum International School made a big splash to the third position with 143 points, edging out Musaeus College.
Last year’s Mixed School Champions, Wattala Lyceum International School, continued their remarkable run by leading the pack with a substantial collection of 278 points.
Gampaha Lyceum International School secured the second spot with 162 points while Stafford International School maintained their grip on the third position with 108 points.
