Three cops remanded over Welikada maid’s death

Colombo Additional Magistrate Harshana Kekunawela yesterday ordered the remand of three Police officers including two Sergeants attached to the Crime Branch of the Welikada Police till September 11 over the murder of a housemaid of the Teledrama producer Sudarma Nettikumara using a blunt weapon.

The Criminal Investigation Department investigating into this murder arrested the two Sergeants and a Police Constable in connection with murder. The housemaid Rajakumari had arrived the residence of teledrama producer on May 3, 2023 and two police officers in civvies had arrived at the house and taken her to the police station where she has been beaten.

It was disclosed in Court that Rajakumari who was in critical condition after being beaten by the Police officers, had died on admission to the hospital.

The suspects were produced before Court with their faces covered and Police appealed court for an identification parade to identify the suspects.

The CID informed the court that investigations into the murder are still going on and more suspects are to be arrested soon. The Additional Magistrate ordered the police to produce the suspects in court on September 11 covering their faces. Lawyers who appeared for the suspects appealed the court to issue an order to the Prison authorities to ensure the security of suspects who are Police officers.

The Additional Magistrate ordered the remand of the suspects till September 11 after placing a note with regard to the request made by the lawyers.

ASP Merill Ranjan Lamahewa of the Special Crime Division and IP Madhawa Gunawardena of the CID led the prosecution.
