Notes worth Rs.207.3 Bn destroyed last year

The Central Bank of Sri Lanka says that last year (2022) 238.5 million damaged or defaced banknotes worth Rs.207.3 billion were destroyed to ensure the use of clean currency notes.

The CBSL said its aim is to ensure the circulation of quality currency notes in the country.

Accordingly, the Central Bank destroyed mutilated currency notes, Currency Department Superintendent P.D.R.Dayananda said.

In 2018, 343.8 million mutilated notes were destroyed. Its value is Rs.252.2 billion, he said. The amount of mutilated currency notes destroyed in 2019 is 235 million.Its value is Rs.139.8 billion. In 2020, 127.3 million notes worth Rs.62.2 billion rupees were destroyed and in 2021, 108.2 million notes worth Rs.44.3 billion were destroyed.
