AG’s opinion sent to IRD

6 September, 2023

Education Minister Dr. Susil Premajayantha said in Parliament yesterday that the opinion of the Attorney General regarding the tax hike on the incomes of university lecturers has already been sent to the Inland Revenue Department (IRD) and he hopes that relevant officials in the Department will take appropriate action in this regard after consultation with the Treasury.

The Minister also said that the University Lecturers’ Association (EIS-ULA) is well aware that he has done everything which needs to be done regarding this issue.

The Minister said this while answering a question raised by Opposition Leader Sajith Premadasa under Standing Orders 27(2).

All professionals are included in the 36 percent tax bracket when their study allowances and examination allowances are added together.

“We solved some of the problems of university lecturers through discussions. The opinion of the Attorney General’s Department has now been sent to the Inland Revenue Department. I did what I was asked to do. The Association knows that. The Inland Revenue Department should then send the related reports to the Finance Ministry and get final recommendation,” the Minister said.
