CEB-Restructure Bill in Parliament in October

6 September, 2023

Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera said in Parliament yesterday that the Bill to restructure the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) will be submitted to the House next month.

He also mentioned that the Bill will be submitted to the Cabinet after the approval of the Attorney General’s Department is provided.

The Minister said that there are problems regarding the efficiency of the 24,000 employees of the CEB and that the number of employees will have to be reduced if it is necessary in the future. He said that outsourcing of labour takes place sometime and it will be a big burden to the Board. The Minister also said that the Government had made a policy decision not to construct coal power plants in Sri Lanka.

“A solar power plant will be constructed instead of the earlier plan to set up a coal power plant in Sampur,” he also said. The Minister said this in reply to a question raised by SJB MP Kins Nelson.
