Journalism Awards on Tuesday

The 24th edition of the annual Journalism Awards for Excellence will be held at the Mount Lavinia Hotel on Tuesday, December 12.

The awards night is organised by the Editors’ Guild of Sri Lanka in partnership with the Sri Lanka Press Institute and its affiliated unions, the Newspaper Society of Sri Lanka, Free Media Movement and the Sri Lanka Working Journalists Association.

The annual event is held to recognise professional excellence in journalism and award those who excel in it. This year, 36 journalists will receive the ‘Pen Trophy’ Award and 16 others will receive Certificates of Merit, along with five Lifetime Achievement Awardees: H. L. D. Mahindapala, Stanley Samarasinghe, Seetha Ranjanee, S. Thillainathan and A. L. M. Nilam.

The recipient of the Young Journalist of the Year Award will receive the Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial Scholarship presented by the Lakshman Kadirgamar Foundation for a course in advanced training at MASCOM, a journalism institute run by the Manorama Group in Kerala, India.

The main sponsors of the event are John Keells Holdings, Aitken Spence, Dialog Axiata Plc, Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation, Bank of Ceylon, People’s Bank and Olu Water. The Mount Lavinia Hotel is the host-hotel.

Journalism Awards for Excellence Convener Sukumar Rockwood said that 354 applications received from seven newspaper publishing houses were accepted by an independent panel of judges consisting of 13 members ( print media) and a four-member independent panel of judges (online newspapers).
