The Mercantile Football Association (MFA) marked its 105th anniversary celebrations with a function at the Grand Ballroom of the Galle Face hotel in Colombo that vibrated the atmosphere on December 6.
The MFA boasts a legacy dating back to 1918, making it one of the oldest football leagues in Sri Lanka and its impact on the sport is undeniable.
The anniversary celebration served as a poignant reminder of this legacy, honoring the pioneers who laid the foundation and the generations who have carried the torch forward.
Among the dignitaries who graced the occasion were Stewart Michael Regan (Senior Consultant, FIFA and Former General Secretary, Scotland Football Association), Prince Rufus (Lead Regional Office, FIFA South Asia), Chokey Nima (FIFA Regional Technical Consultant, South Asia) and Jaswar Umar (President, Football Sri Lanka).
The evening unfolded with a heartwarming ceremony that recognized the most active member companies, players and committee members.
Addressing the gathering MFA president Saif Yusoof, emphasized the importance of collaboration in elevating the standards of football in Sri Lanka.
He highlighted the Association’s efforts to support players by providing employment opportunities with member companies, which has not only improved their livelihoods but also fostered a stronger environment for players to excel in their sport.
