Menuji Weerasinghe from Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda and Hiruja Wanniarachchi from Ananda College emerged as champions in the under-19 girls’ and boys’ singles events respectively at the table tennis championship conducted by the University of Moratuwa at their New Gymnasium from February 23 to 25.
A total of 18 competitions were held, spanning various age groups, including under-7, 9, 11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 for both boys and girls, along with the Novice and Intermediate categories in the men’s and women’s divisions.
In a touching tribute to the late Mohan Agashan, a revered member of the university team, the championship trophies for the Novices and Intermediate events were dedicated in his memory.
This was the 10th edition of MORA SMASHES 2024 bringing together table tennis enthusiasts and showcasing exceptional young talents in the island.
According to the organizers, the event stood out as a testament to the Moratuwa University’s dedication to fostering a sense of community within its ranks.
Menuji Weerasinghe from Vihara Maha Devi Balika Vidyalaya, Kiribathgoda was the under-19 girls’ singles champion and runner-up in both Novices and Intermediate women’s singles events.
Tiyaana Punchihewa from Bishop’s College became champion in both under-13 and under-15 girls’ singles events while Hiruja Wanniarachchi from Ananda College was the champion in both under-17 and under-19 boys’ singles.
Sinali Susanya Wanninayake from Maliyadeva Balika Vidyalaya Kurunegala became champion in both under-17 girls’ singles and Novices women’s singles
The closing ceremony was graced by Pavithra Chathuranga, the acting director of the Physical Education Division of the University of Moratuwa as the Chief Guest. (TBR)
