This is a unique custom which is followed in certain areas of Sri Lanka on the day of the Old Year.

The lady of the house collects the dirt to an old winnowing fan or similar receptacle.

Then she places some sweetmeats on top and takes it to the jungle. She places the receptacle under a tree. This is the offering for the Kunu muththa. All this must be done without speaking. Then she returns home washing herself in a waterway on the way back.

As she enters the house she calls out “onna mama kunu muththa piduwa”.
