The United National Party’s (UNP) May Day celebrations will be held at Maligawatta, Colombo on May 1, at 2 p.m, themed Yali Nowatena Abhimanawath Ratak (A proud country that will not fall again).

UNP General Secretary Palitha Range Bandara said that nearly 50,000 supporters are expected to participate, which will be presided over by UNP Leader President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Bandara said that the May Day celebrations have been entrusted to 1,000 organisers of the UNP. This marks the first time since President Ranasinghe Premadasa that a UNP Leader is participating in a party May Day rally as President.

The UNP Secretary General extended an open invitation to all parties to join the May Day celebrations, citing this as the initial step in forming an alliance for the forthcoming Presidential election. Bandara said that the UNP’s May Day will showcase a concerted effort to mobilise public support for President Wickremesinghe ahead of the elections.
