Some acquire certain skills by making a great effort and some have creativity thrust upon themselves. Amongst them seldom do we find only a wistful of individuals who are born talented and creative. Such individuals undoubtedly belong to the rare calibre. Attitudes, views, ideas and opinions that they possess and share are unique and noteworthy.

The Youth Observer spoke to Sujith Lal De Silva to share with you his memories and experiences.

Being a multifaceted artist, Sujith has conquered the international arena through his own inborn creativity and skills. Behind all his achievements, there is a story which serves as a source of inspiration for all.

His journey from gokkola decorations to portrait art

His brushstrokes on a canvas narrate thousands of stories and his choice of colours awakens drowsy eyes. He has been drawing and painting pictures since his childhood. Receiving love and respect from his fans, Sujith came to be known as a kind-hearted artist among his family members, neighbours and friends. He has supported many villagers and friends through his creativity without expecting even a cent.

“Whenever there were weddings, funerals and various events in our village, I did the ‘Gokkola decorations (decorations of coconut leaves) for the villagers without expecting money. I earned people, not money,” said Sujith with pride.

His journey from gokkola decorations to portrait art and cake decorating was not a bed of rose. He had to go through many difficulties. On one hand, his destiny tested Sujith’s stamina and will-power in numerous ways.

“When I got married, my wife and I flew to Italy where I met a famous artist named Mini Gnoli. Discerning my skills, he gave me an opportunity to contribute to his artistic works. It was a great opportunity for me,” he said.

“If there is a will, there is a way.” This is an old saying which keeps us motivated. Sujith took a life-changing decision to go to England during his stay in Italy. His visit to England changed his destiny. Surprisingly, he started working at a well-known hotel called Grand Hotel, Marco Pierre White, Leicester in England. Sujith has drawn the portraits of Queen Elizabeth, cricketers, artistes and so on.

Sujith started a new chapter in his life not only as an artist but also as a chef. He widened his friendship with many at his restaurant. Interestingly, what changed his destiny was his birthday cake for his head chef.

“I decorated a birthday cake for our head chef’s birthday. On seeing the cake design and decorations, he was impressed and understood my skills and creativity. This is how I got to work with him. Not only that, I can never forget that the hotel enabled me to follow the NVQ course in the field of hotel and tourism,” Sujith said.

Nothing is impossible

Never does Sujith share negative attitudes and ideas. Nothing is impossible is his motto. During the corona we all were home-bound. However, some individuals spent their spare time effectively and meaningfully.

For instance, writers penned poems, songs, novels and short stories. Artists spent time drawing pictures. Sujith Lal, as a distinguished character in his field, wanted to explore a new field. This is how he started preparing cake for his family events, neighbors and friends. His maiden cake was dedicated to his own beloved daughter.

“I did not have experience decorating cakes earlier. But I tried my hand at it and received positive comments from all. I prepared my first cake for my daughter. It was incredibly creative. Everyone appreciated my work.” Sujith recalled his past memories. Concluding our conversation, Sujith said, “My elder daughter is Anjela. She is a medical student. Kevin is my younger son. He is pursuing a pilot course and my youngest daughter, Yasodara is studying Business and Management. My wife is Cherin De Soysa.”
