JO’s behaviour to be taken up at party leaders meeting

30 July, 2017

The unparliamentary behaviour of the Joint Opposition (JO) members who created havoc in the well of the House after it was abruptly adjourned on Friday, July 28, will be taken up at the next Party Leaders meeting to be held during the next Parliamentary session.

Meanwhile, disciplinary action against those who resorted to such unparliamentary behaviour will be decided by the special parliamentary committee set up to look into such incidents. A special report will also be called regarding this incident, highly informed Parliamentary sources told the Sunday Observer yesterday. They said the people were surprised to see that unruly behaviour of the JO members in Parliament and a lot of agitation is coming in and outside the Parliament to take disciplinary action against them. Abruptly suspending the Parliament sittings has become a common phenomenon during the last few months owing to various disturbances and chaos by the JO members in the well of the House. Therefore, some actions should be taken to control this situation, the sources said. Friday’s Parliament sittings came to an abrupt end due to the chaos reigned in Parliament when the JO members stormed the well of the House during the vote on the gazette extraordinary proclaiming the supply and distribution of fuel as an essential service under the Essential Public Services Act. Meanwhile, the JO members who remained in the Chamber after the Speaker adjourned Parliament enacted a big drama in the well of the House ridiculing the Speaker, Parliament and its dignity and decorum. Soon after the incident, Power and Renewable Energy Deputy Minister Ajith P. Perera during a hurried press conference held at the Parliamentary complex said the Government members called on the Speaker to take disciplinary action against JO MPs Piyankara Jayaratne and Mahindananda Aluthgamage for ridiculing the Parliament after it was adjourned.
