Pethara anicut in a dilapidated state

21 January, 2018

The Pethara irrigation anicut in the Kitalagama East 2 Grama Niladari in the Divisional Secretariat Division of Thihagoda is in a dilapidated state.

The Thihagoda- Welletota via Malimbada main highway runs across the irrigation anicut.

According to motorists the stretch of the highway on the anicut is narrow and that they find it difficult to drive lengthy and heavy vehicles through this point. Even two small vehicles find it hard to pass through each other.

The anicut was built over 70 years ago across the Kiramba Oya which is one of the main tributaries of the Nilwala river.

This anicut provide water to Pethara, Mihitigoda,Dalugoda, Kitalagama East 1, 2, and 3 and Thihagoda.

The hairpinbend off this point has also been a death trap. Several road accidents have taken place at the location due to the appalling state of the anicut.

The railings of the anicut have been broken down due to recent floods.

This is the only short route to the Godagama inter change of the Southern Expressway for people travelling from Thihagoda, Yatiyana, Mulatiyana, Deiyandara, Pasgoda, Makandura, Hakmana,Walasmulle and Middeniya.
