Moves to halt garbage dumping at Tissamaharama forest reserves

The new Minister of Sustainable Development and Wildlife, Ravindra Samaraweera said at a meeting that plans are underway to put an end to the releasing of garbage and refuse water to forest reserves in the Tissamaharama area.

According to the minister, based on the information obtained by him the issue was created by the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha. The minister said the Tissamaharama Pradeshiya Sabha collects garbage in Tissamaharama and dumps them at a site within the boundary limits of Yala National Park. He said the garbage consumed by animals are creating serious health problems for them.

The minister further added that after discussions with relevant wildlife department officials it has been revealed that there are 35 garbage dumping locations across the island.

He said it is a severe issue and steps will be taken to put an end to the irresponsible act after discussing with all relevant local government institutions.
