US quits UN Human Rights Council

22 July, 2018

The United States has pulled out of the United Nations Human Rights Council.

US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley announced the move while speaking at the UN recently.

The Council formed in 206, has been criticised by the United States for allowing countries with questionable human rights records to be members.

However, the move comes at a time when President Trump had started a policy of separating children from their parents at the US-Mexico border.

The Trump administration’s decision to withdraw from the UN Human Rights Council is the latest in a series of international bodies or agreements it has pulled out of.
