Universal Children's Day was declared in 1954 by the United Nations Organization. This day is dedicated to encourage unity and understanding among children and to promote their welfare. Each country is given the freedom to choose an appropriate day. Countries all over the world organise special events for children on that day. Sri Lanka celebrates Children's Day on October 1st.
