16 June, 2019

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) will report facts regarding Dr. Seigu Shihabdeen Mohamed Shafi’s case before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court on June 27, on recent statements recorded from other medical and non medical officials, including minor staff.

The CID has recorded statements from 69 nurses, 26 doctors including Visiting Obstetrician and Gynaecologists (VOGs) and 14 minor staff employees who have worked with Dr. Shafi during his tenure at the Teaching Hospital, Kurunegala, the District Hospital, Galewela and Base Hospital, Dambulla.

CID sources revealed that they have recorded statements from all females who have complained to be infertile, claiming that the doctor in question has manipulated with their reproductive system while attending to their previous confinements. More than six hundred women have lodged complaints. Following the Easter Sunday attacks in April, Dr. Shafi was accused of sterilizing mothers illegally. He was arrested under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for amassing large amounts of undeclared assets, and later the public urged to come forward with complaints against the doctor who was a Senior House Officer (SHO) at the Teaching Hospital, Kurunegala at the time of arrest. The CID has undertaken a separate investigation into a Sinhala language newspaper article stating that a Thawheed Jama’ath’ doctor has sterilized 4,000 ‘Sinhala’ mothers.
