NPP inaugural rally today

18 August, 2019

National People’s Power (NPP) a front comprising 28 organisations led by the leftist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) will announce its Presidential candidate today at its inaugural rally in Colombo.

The rally will be held at the Galle Face Green at 4 p.m. with the attendance of JVP party leaders, supporters and representatives of the organisations which have extended their support to the NPP candidate. The JVP previously confirmed that the candidate put forward by the NPP will be a member of the NPP and a political figure.

According to the party’s General Secretary Tilvin Silva, only the NPP led by the JVP can defeat the uncivilised political culture of the Rajapaksa camp. “Our candidate is the only alternative left for the people,” Silva said at a press conference on Friday. He stressed that it is imperative to defeat the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna candidate Gotabaya Rajapaksa to uphold democracy and the rule of law in the country.

“There is only the camp that has destroyed the country, which is the Rajapaksa and UNP camps and then there is us, the camp that will protect the country,” he said. The JVP General Secretary invited all Sri Lankans to team up with the political force which will protect the country and its people.
